When you become our patient, you can trust that we’ll not only do everything we can to help you make the most of your dental insurance, but we’ll also give you the knowledge you need to maximize your coverage. Below, you’ll find our short guide that could literally help you save thousands on your dental care. If you have any questions about your particular plan, you’re always welcome to give us a call.
How Does Dental Insurance Work?
Dental insurance is different than health insurance which involves the policyholder paying a monthly premium to an insurance plan, and in exchange, that insurance carrier pays for all or most of a patient’s healthcare services. With dental insurance, the insurance pays to a maximum amount (usually between $1000 to $2500) and at a percentage of the cost – not the full amount. The highest level of coverage usually applies to preventive treatments like checkups and cleanings. This is intended to help patients treat minor issues early, which over time, stops more advanced problems from developing.
What Does My Dental Insurance Cover?
While we can’t tell you exactly what your plan covers without talking to you first, we can say that your benefits probably look very similar to this:
- Checkups, cleanings, X-rays, and other preventive services are typically and generally covered at 80-100%
- Fillings, bridges, crowns, dentures, and other restorative services are typically and generally covered at 50-80%
- Veneers, whitening, bonding, and other cosmetic services are usually NOT covered
For most people, the best way to use their dental insurance is to have it primarily pay for their two recommended checkups and cleanings each year—this keeps out-of-pocket costs low while greatly minimizing the risk of cavities and gum disease.
