Get to Know James L. Schumacher, DMD

Dr. Schumacher’s dental career impressively spans over 40 years so far, and he’s been a member of the Jacksonville community since 1995. Today, what he enjoys most about being a dentist is getting to know his patients on a personal level while also enhancing their smiles and improving their lives. If you’d like to learn more about Dr. Schumacher, continue reading below.

Why Did You Decide to Become a Dentist?

Dr. Schumacher first became interested in dentistry when he was in high school. He went in to see his family dentist for a filling, who worked in beautiful Tampa Bay. The process went by fast – just some chatting and joking around, two cups of coffee for the dentist, a few minutes of focused work, and the final touches. The doctor then handed him a bill for $20 and told him to say “hello” to his parents. Right then and there, Dr. Schumacher thought to himself: “I could do this job. I like the view, I like coffee, and I like the idea of getting $20 for 20 minutes of work!” He started to investigate the process of attending dental school – and the rest is history.

Where Did You Study Dentistry?

Dr. Schumacher completed both his undergraduate degree and dental doctorate at the University of Florida. He is also passionate about continuing education, which is why he’s a Scholar of the prestigious L.D. Pankey Institute, where the principles of optimal patient care have significantly influenced his own approach to dentistry. He has also participated in Miami Implant Seminars as both a student and a faculty member, regularly mentors dental students at the University of Florida College of Dentistry, and has even been featured in Jacksonville Magazine’s TOP Dentists since 2013. Today, he is a member of the American Dental Association, Florida Dental Association, and the American Equilibration Society.

What is Your Approach to Dental Care?

Dr. Schumacher has always believed the overall health of each patient is his priority. Oral health is a function of patient wellness. From addressing oral health issues that can affect cardiological function to dental anxiety impacting your day, taking the time to understand, diagnose and treat with compassionate care is the focus. Dr. Schumacher and his dental specialists view each patient in totality. That personalized care is a hallmark of the practice and in fact Dr. Schumacher’s career.

Outside of the Dental Office, What Do You Like to Do?

Dr. Schumacher and his wife have been married for over 35 years, and they have three kids. The oldest two are boy/girl twins! One is a pilot in the United States Navy, while the other is currently attending her second year of dental school at Columbia University. Their youngest son is a website designer. As for personal hobbies, he and his wife play golf every opportunity they get and even like to turn their travels into golf trips when possible. He also enjoys cooking, which is something he picked up while working as a cook in several restaurants through college and dental school.
